Nerello
Cappuccio 100% grown as alberello (spur pruning cordon). Nerello Cappuccio or Mantellato
(mantled), is an indigenous variety of Etna. It’s name is attributed
by the unique “mantle shape form”, cappuccio, which is cultivated
like alberello (free standing bush). Although its origin is
unknown, it has always been present, in small percentages (15-20%)
together with Nerello Mascalese, on the Etnean territory. In
the last few decades, it was continuously abandoned by the
vine growers, almost risking extinction. This variety is constituted
as an Etna red D.O.C. (20%). Vinified 100% it makes the wine
ready for consumption with average ageing. It is of late maturation
(second decade of October). This Nerello Cappuccio comes from
a vineyard which we planted after our extensive research of
vine producing and after our selection of the many vine varieties
of Nerello Cappuccio on Etna.
